Legibility is a measurable thing

Hand length, index contrast, type size, the space between elements — these are testable properties, not matters of taste. A dial either reads at arm's length in poor light or it does not. Interfaces submit to the same kind of test.

Machines can now produce competent work in seconds. That changes what craftsmanship means, but it does not remove it. Judgement about what should exist, and the patience to remove what should not, are still human work.
