Short answer: Minimalism in design means cutting every element that does no work, then ranking what is left so the eye reads it in order. A watch dial does this under hard limits: one glance, poor light, a face about 30 millimetres wide. Screens face the same task with far more room.

The Rams test: less, but better

Dieter Rams led design at Braun for three decades and compressed his approach into three German words, Weniger, aber besser. In English that reads as less, but better. His ten principles of good design close on the claim that good design is as little design as possible.

The idea reaches back further. The Bauhaus, a German school of art and industry that ran from 1919 to 1933, taught that a form should follow the use it serves. Its legacy is kept by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. Max Bill trained there and later drew dials for Junghans that hold to slim batons, even numerals and nothing else.

Empty is not the same as minimal

A dial without a minute track is not minimal if you need the minutes. It is incomplete. The two look alike in a photograph and behave differently on the wrist.

Minimalism is not the same thing as flat design either. Flatness, or flat design, is a style choice about shadows, edges and depth. Minimalism is a decision about what appears at all. The two get applied together often, yet neither one requires the other.

So the real test is a subtraction test. A design is minimal when one more removal would cost function. Cutting past that line is not restraint. It is lost function dressed up as taste.

Why a dial is a hard interface

A dial runs on a brutal budget. It is read at arm's length, in changing light, by someone already busy with something else. Very few screens work under limits that tight.

It also serves three separate readings from one surface, and it ranks them.

Where the discipline was forged

Legibility hardened wherever the stakes rose. Pilot and field watches pushed contrast to its limit with oversized numerals and luminous paint. They were read in cockpits and trenches, a lineage traced in the history of the wristwatch, and everyday dials still borrow their standard.

Pressure came from the other direction too. Every added display competes for the same few square centimetres, which makes watch complications the dial designer's hardest bargain. A moon phase or a second time zone has to pay rent in usefulness. Otherwise the face turns to noise.

Digital watch faces prove the point by repeating it. A smartwatch can display anything at all, so its designers spend most of their effort deciding what to leave off. The faces people keep are the ones that still rank a single reading above everything else.

Size, weight and contrast do the sorting

Emphasis is a budget with a fixed total. If every element is bold, none of them is, and the reader has to sort the screen alone. Dials spend that budget on the hands and give the rest very little.

Contrast is the most generous tool in the set. The most legible dials are black on white or white on black, because their makers assumed dim light and tired eyes. One typeface, applied without exception

A classic dial uses a single typeface, drawn or chosen for the size it will be printed at. Its numerals match each other exactly. Interfaces earn the same calm from a small type scale, perhaps four sizes and two weights, used everywhere without exception.

Every extra face or weight taxes the reader's pattern recognition. Variation should always mean something. When it means nothing, it reads as noise and slows everyone down.

Tip: Shrink a screenshot of your interface until it is the width of a watch dial. Whatever still reads at that size is your real hierarchy. Anything that disappears was never carrying the message.

Space and colour carry meaning

Empty area on a dial is not waste. It is the structure. Distance groups the marks that belong together and separates the ones that do not, which is why a good dial needs no boxes or dividing lines.

Screens obey the same law of proximity. Consistent spacing organises information more gracefully than borders ever do. White space is not the absence of design. It is the part of the design that lets the rest be read.

Colour follows a strict economy. A classic dial holds one or two colours and spends its accent colour once, on a red chronograph tip or a contrasting track. The accent then carries information instead of decoration. An interface that saves its accent colour for the primary action applies the identical rule.

Colour should never carry a meaning on its own. Readers who cannot separate red from green will miss the signal, and so will anyone reading in strong sunlight. Pair every colour cue with a shape, a label or a position, the way a dial pairs its red tip with a differently shaped hand.

Surface and material matter as much as pigment. A brushed dial scatters light where a lacquered one throws glare, and the luminous compound decides whether the reading survives the dark. Where minimalism turns against the user

Subtraction has one common failure mode: cutting the signposts instead of the noise. The result looks calm in a screenshot and costs the user more effort than the clutter ever did.

Hidden controls are not clean design

A control with no visible affordance, meaning no clue that it can be used at all, is invisible to most people. An action buried behind an unlabelled icon or an invisible swipe simply does not exist for them. Usability research has been blunt about this for decades. Nielsen Norman Group's ten usability heuristics ask for visible system status and for recognition rather than recall.

Watchmaking suffers the same disease. Dials with no markers at all photograph beautifully and measurably fail at their one job. Fashion tolerates that trade. Function does not.

Flat hierarchy is not calm

The subtler failure is uniformity. Give every label the same weight and every block the same size, and the screen reads as fog. The designer has quietly handed the sorting work to the reader.

Dials never make that mistake. However plain the palette, the hands still outrank the markers. A flat visual style is fine. A flat hierarchy is a refusal to decide.

Density is a decision, not a default

Some readers need more on one screen, not less. A trading desk, a hospital chart and a flight deck all pack information tightly on purpose, because switching views costs time the user does not have. Minimalism does not mean sparse. It means that whatever is shown has been chosen.

How to subtract without breaking things

Restraint is a loop, not a mood board. Five moves keep it honest.

  1. Start from the task, not the canvas. Write down what the reader must do at a glance, then design backwards from that line.
  2. Remove one thing at a time. Each removal is a hypothesis, and batching them hides which cut did the damage.
  3. Watch a stranger use it. Hesitation, squinting and missed controls are your data. Opinions about taste are not.
  4. Try hierarchy before you add furniture. Reach for size, weight, contrast and position before you reach for a box or a rule.
  5. Stop where removal starts costing function. That point is the finished design, whatever the screenshot looks like.

The same loop works on language. A prompt, a caption or a report improves when you cut the words that carry no information, which is the practical half of writing a good prompt.
